Hello everybody, I’m Yi Tian of the Actors Reporter and welcome to the TradeVine. We’ve compiled some of the more interesting articles that you might have missed this week. Our goal here at the TradeVine is to help you stay informed and to keep up with the trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.
The Hollywood Reporter put out a special report for December 2010 entitled “The Race is On.” Now that the Golden Globe and SAG nominations are out, the odds-on favorites, dark horses and off-the-wall long shots of awards season come into focus. As the race heats up, some of the movies to watch out for are “True Grit,” starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. “Waiting for Superman,” written by John Legend, “The Ghost Writer,” directed by Roamn Polanski, “The Kids are All Right,” starring Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, “All Good Things,” with Kirsten Dunst, “The Fighter,” starring Mark Wahlberg, “Frankie & Alice,” starring Halle Berry, “the social network,” about the Facebook creation, “Barney’s Version,” starring Paul Giamatti, “Inception,” “Shutter Island,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese, and “Red.”
The Daily Variety, Monday, December 20th”Crimer in China,” by Michael Schneider. Will Smith is making a return trip to China for a series in development at Fox. Smith and John Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment have partnered with Chinese-born filmmaker Eva Jin to develop a crime drama set in that country.
Back Stage, December 16th-29th, “What a CD really does,” by Eric Souliere with Liz Dean. There is no Oscar award for casting directors in recognition for their work. What is a casting director’s job? The CD’s job is to explore every actor who could possibly be the right fit for the role at hand. They need to be aware of and stay on top of as many actors as they can. They watch all the films, television shows, and theatre that they can, always expanding their already vast knowledge of actors. The job of a casting director is much more than holding auditions for the smaller roles. 90 percent of the time, the lead actors landed their roles because a casting director was fighting for them in one way or another. How do you know when a casting director has done his or her job? They say good casting is when the audience doesn’t question or even notice the choice of actors because they are so right for the roles.
